Prices paid for both calves and adult store cattle at Adding ton yesterday dropped from , levels of a w eek ago, with the better grades commanding reasonably stead} prices but medium and lighter cattle down in the, opinion of most observers. Smaller tussock calves once again predominated, with lew of the quality animals seen at rec'ent sales. ; Calves generally were considered. to be down in price b> as much as Sl5 a head and adult i cattle by as much as $lO. I The decline was thought to be ' temporary and both sellers and buyers said that they expected prices to rise again. The demand, especially for calves, was considered to be well below that of recent weeks The yarding of calves was also well below that of last week's I sale: 879 compared with 1266. On the basis of quoted pen prices, steer , calves averaged isl4B a pen as compared with $168.50 last week. Again, on the basis of quoted; prices'* only, heifers averaged , $126 a pen compared with $142 1 last week. The top price paid for steer calves was $169, compared with $261 last week. The top-priced .heifer calf this week sold at $155, {compared with $lB9. { Top steer calves sold between $156 and $169, average between $137 and $l5l. and others from $l2l down to $B9. The best heifer calves sold from $l3B to $155, average from $ll2 to $133 range, and others from $ll2 down to $65 in one exceptional case. The yarding of adult cattle was also down on last week's, totalling 806 compared with 983. The top price paid for adult steers was $2BO for a Angus from Cloudy Range., Adult heifers sold to as much as $240. these being from The Downs. Mt Somers. Top steers aged from 18 to 20 months sold between $240 and $267, with others of the same i age down to $l9O. Heifers in the same age group sold from $240 down to $157.
