Thief raced off
“One for the road” proved expensive for one entrant in the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club’s Lion Brown “bikeathon” on Saturday. A thief rode off on a $lOOO road racing cycle while the participants in the 30-kilomt<tre tour of city hotels and taverns were making their stop at the Zetland Hotel in Cashel Street To add insult to injury, the machine belonged to
Mr Joe Paviell, who was, unlike most of the other “bikeathon” riders, once a competitive cyclist of some note. The bicycle, a white English Bertin model, had not been recovered by last evening. It was the first time In the seven-year history of the charity event that an entrant’s bicycle has been stolen — in spite of the number of hostelries outsido which the cycles were . lined up.
