Restrictions on petrol

Sir, — The present Government is marching on relentlessly with its petrol savings plan, in spite of public opinion, seemingly strongly in favour of petrol rationing. Motor fuel affects a large percentage of all taxpayers. Therefore, I feel we should be given the opportunity on how we save it. As long as the target of 15 per cent or more is saved the authorities should be satisfied. I feel it is an issue that could be decided by public vote. If petrol rationing were chosen any black market problems could be controlled, possibly by allocating non-transferable coupons. We could then save coupons for week-ends and holidays. Surely it would turn people -towards public transport which could then “afford” to provide a far more intense service with its expanding patronage. Hopefully, soon, we will develop an all electric powered transport system. — Yours, etc, D. B. O’CONNOR, Twizel. March 26, 1979.
