Pupils ‘put off teaching’
PA Auckland Disillusioned teachers in some schools are undermining teacher-recruitment programmes, according to a senior inspector. The district senior inspector for secondary schools in the Auckland region (Mr R. A. Scott) told the Auckland Teachers’ Colleges Council that the reception of recruitment teams varied enormously.
“Many staff members and principals are actively discouraging young people from coming into teaching because conditions are not as good as they should be,” said Mr Scott.
After the meeting, Mr Scott said that teachers did not even have to say anything because dissatisfaction could be easily detected by pupils.
Mr Scott’s comments were made after a call by another member of the council, Professor W. J. D. Minogue, for better ways of attracting teachers into the profession. “Young people are well aware that, teachers are extremely dissatisfied with the service,” said Professor Minogue.
