Marsden erosion studied

PA Auckland The Government may have to spend up to SIM or more to protect the Marsden power stations and village from flooding and erosion by sea. Officials of the Electricity Division, the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Works, and the Lands and Survey Department met at

Auckland to discuss interim studies on the eroding sandspit where the new SIIBM Marsden B station is being built.

Last winter’s severe storms brought the sea to within 28m of the Marsden A station and village of several hundred permanent houses. It lowered the beach 1.5 m in some places and destroyed much of the plastic dune fencing and grass plantings designed to stabilise the dunes.

The district operations engineer for the Electricity Division (Mr D. Dell) says it will not take much more loss of the Marsden dunes to cause severe flooding in power stations and the village. Some scientists believe the coast has moved out of a stable period into a cycle of erosion.

The Northland Catchment Commission's chief executive (Mr A. Moores) said from Whangarei: “The lesson is clear: do not build on sandspits unless absolutely necessary.”
