Cricket Suburban group play starts

The senior A grade of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s competition is now divided into two groups and the opening round under the new format started on Saturdax.

In the previous round Robert Wilson of Hornby had had the extraordinary figures, for him. of two for 95, but on Saturday, on a soft wicket, he returned a heartening performance to take six for 27 ofl’ 20 overs. Belfast was dismissed for 89, Roger Taylor <23) being the only player to offer any real resistance.

Bob Kerr also had a good spell, taking three for 21. Neither bowler will play next Saturday as Wilson is in the representative XI to play North Canterbury at Edgar Mclntosh Park while Kerr will be connected with the inter-services tournament.

The game is evenly poised. Hornby was 49 for six at stumps, Terry Cockburn has taken four wickets for 21.

In the other group B match H.H.W.M.C. was all out for 112; John Neilson and Noel Strez were the only batsmen to reach 20. Another representative bowler Dave McNaughton, had a good warm-up by taking five for 49 and received assistance from Paul Hammant (three for 22).

Merivale-Papanui was 150 for nine at stumps thanks mainly to another good half-century from Kenn Stagg and useful scores from Bill Shierlaw and lan Martin.

In group A. Sumner, after being put in to bat. capitalised on a depleted Woolston W.M.C. bowling attack. It declared at 203 for two after Peter Sargison completed his century.

Tony McKendry <s6i and Jon Monk 130) scored quick runs as the club side was without Dave Quested, Norm Sloan, and Ken Taylor.

With John Graham taking five for 38 and Alan Hounsell four for 32. \\ .W.M.C. was dismissed shortlj before stumps for 91 and will follow-on next Saturday.

Electing to hat. Waltham’s Tim O Loughlin compiled a good 51. while Allan Laurent, fresh from a • successful tour to northern New South Wales with the Kiwi Colts, top scored with 53 and helped Waltham to 150.
