Runway work at airport

About a fifth of the main runway at Christchurch Airport’will have sealed “shoulders” added to counter blast damage from the engines of jumbo jets. Blast from the outer engines of 7478 jets flown by Qantas Airways is damaging the grass, and can cause stones and dust to be; blown up. At the root of the trouble is difficulty in getting the (grass established, according to the director of the ChristI church Airport. Authority ! (Mr R. C. Buchanan). He said the earth had been left bare after drainage work at the edge of the runway, and

jet blgst was preventing new] growth. The “shoulders" will be! about 7.5 m wide and will be added on either side to about 450 m of the 2400 m runway. Although they will probably be of concrete, they are not intended to function as part of the runIway and will be of comparatively light construction. The work is now up for tender, and is expected to; take about three weeks. Ser-| vice will not be disrupted.: as domestic flights will leave from the cross-runway, and the work will stop to I allow international flights! use of the main runway.
