Vancouver-born Michael Birch, .who spends most of his time at sea sailing yachts from builders’ yards to buyers, has won the” first French single-handed transAtlantic race from St Malo, France, to Pointe-d-Pitre, Guadeloupe. Birch out. manouevred a Frenchman, Michel Malinovsky, in the last few miles of the 4000 nauticai-miie. race, to win by less than 2min in his 11.5 m trimaran Olympic Photo. —NZPA.
