Farm block for breeding

PA Wellington A farm settlement, block at Rotomahana will be used by the Ministry of Agriculture for its sheepbreeding programme, according to The Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young). Mr Young, who is the chairman of the Land Settlement Board, said that the 579 ha block, about 26km south-east of Rotorua, would replace the Crater block.

Farming stopped at the Crater block in September after an outbreak of scrapie disease among an exotic sheep flock which had been transferred from Mana Island. The Rotomahana land would be used by the Ministry for research on improving sheep productivity, n with particular emphasis on increasing lamb production, Mr, Young said. The programme would generally use native breeds rather than exotics, he said. Technicians from Crater block and a scientist from Mana Island would be employed at Rotomahana. The block would be handed over on February 1, and the agreement reviewed after 12 years.
