Attitude to animals
Sir, — The article on cruelty to animals as being part of our heritage (November 28) was very interesting, but the point I would like to make is that violence to life is not only our heritage, but basic to nature itself. From that moment • in evolutioh (creation if you wish) when some forms of life began eating other forms of life, the die was cast. And when other creatures began eating the vegetable eaters, e.g. lions eating zebras, humans eating sheep and poultry, etc., the seal of violence was further reinforced. Our human task is to let reason
be our guide and to be as sensible as possible, thus alleviating the conditions of life imposed on us by nature. — Yours, etc., H. COX. November 29, 1978.
