Fish screens
Sir, — With reference to the article, “Council fights fish screen demands” (“The Press,” November 22), it amazes me to. see a statement made by Mr Anderson, of the Ellesmere County Council, that a water right exists to take water for the purposes of a stock-water system only, and not for irrigation, yet photographic
evidence was presented by the N.C.A.S. showing that water is being used for the purpose of irrigation; this has and will strand many thousands of acclimatised fish on irrigated paddocks. It would seem that Mr Anderson is therefore badly informed by his council or that he is trying to mislead the Catchment Board. The installation of a fish screen at the irrigation intake on the Rakaia River is a small price to pay for the privilege of using this water. — Yours, etc., H. P. J. van LIER. November 29, 1978-
