Disarmament

Sir, — If your report, “Total disarmament would save little,” (November 28) is an accurate report of what was said by Major Beddle to the seminar for sixth formers, then I am very disappointed. Sure, we need to look at the swords, but what of the ploughshares? Could we be better off if New Zealand disarmed? The one-third saved could go to the Department of Foreign Affairs. This would double its income and hopefully its effectiveness. The D.S.I.R. could be asked to take over the research with the appropriate budget. This would hopefully declassify a lot of information Air New Zealand may require to fly to Antarctica, and the police could extend the search and rescue work with which they already help. For the rest, we New Zealanders could look at the possibility of being more self-sufficient and leading a simpler life style. There are many ploughshare options. — Yours, etc., MIA TAY. secretary, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. November 28, 1978.
