Two swimming records go
There were no early season blues for two Pegasus swimmers, Gary Mason and Rochelle Inkster. at the open inter-club carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday evening. They gave notice that they will be two of Canterbury’s top competitors this season. Each broke a Canterbury junior record at the carnival. Inkster broke her own .junior 400 m freestyle record by taking an amazing 6.7 sec off her previous mark. Tn doing so she bettered the 4min 30sec barrier, thus stamping herself as one of the top women freestylers in New Zealand. At 15 years of age her potential is considerable. In August she swam in the Australian and Victorian winter championships in Melbourne and has benefited by the experience. Earlier in the carnival she swam close to her best time in the 100 m freestyle in Imin 2sec. Mason also broke a freestyle record, the 100 m. bv the narrow margin of 0.1 sec. but it was still a commendable effort for so early in the season. His
iitirne was 58.1 sec, which bettered 1 , the previous record held bv (David Clarke. Later Mason showed his versatility by swimming a useful Imin B.Bsec in the 100 m back-: stroke. The best time in this • event, however, was returned by Gavin Dixon (Wharenui) in i Imin 6.ssec. Rickie Binning’ (Wharenui) swam a good I min 1 lO.lsec, easily the best time in. the event by a woman at the* carnival. Paul Rowe (Wharenui > was understandably well outside his! best time over 100 m butterfly.: but his Imin I.Bsec was recorded; with ease, as was his 2min j 2.7 sec swim over 200 m freestyle. Malcolm Pearce (Pegasus) had I the best time in the 200 m indi-' virtual medley at 2min 24sec. while the best effort bv a woman was 2min 36.75ec by Robyn Barry! • Pegasus'). Ngarita Kahl (Pegasus) and Kim Dewar (Wharenui) swam well in the 100 m breaststroke. Deward recording the best time of Imin 22.25ec and Kahi Imin 23.8 sec.
