New surf club rooms opened

Six years of intensive fund raising by members of the North Beach Surf Life-Saving Club resulted in their new clubhouse being opened bv the mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) on Saturday. The 855,000 clubrooms on Marine Parade replaced a 63-year-old building demolished lasi February and give the club twice as much space in their gear shed and first-floor lounge.

For the first time the club also has its own men’s and women’s toilets: previously efrib members had to use public toilets adjacent to the clubrooms. The club raised $20,000 for the project, most of the money coming from weekly raffles in a New Brighton hotel.

A further $20,000 was granted by the New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association from a larger grant to the national body from the Lottery Board of Control.

A $14,000 loan was obtained from the Canterbury Savings Bank to complete the financing of the new clubhouse.

While club members contributed some voluntary labour much of the work was done by a contractor and later by labour provided under the Govorin e n t ’ s employment schemes.

The club hopes the new facilities will attract more members to join the 50 active participants it has now.
