West German use of power
Sir, — During a street meeting by Eric Holland, pamphfets were distributed. I quote from the first page: “. . .ecological disasters which we see in Europe and America have not happened here. And provided we learn the lessons (which we have) they will not happen." This was a contrast to the indifference to the environment Mr Holland showed when answering questions’ on the Clutha scheme. Despite having been Minister of Energy Mr Holland was unaware that farmland was to be flooded in addition to what he describes as “just a few orchards” (17, actually). While discussing West German use of Clutha power, Mr Holland tried to allay fears on the grounds that nothing has yet been signed. Surely now is the time for full and open debate, rather than waiting until after a contract has been signed. By then it will be too late to question and perhaps reverse the decision. — Yours, etc., M. J. COOKSON. November 2, 1978.
