Owner had his way
“Just as well I listen to |my owner sometimes.” said the Riccarton trainer, Mrs Mavis Harris, after Borodino won the L.R.C. Macfarlane Memorial for her stable at Rangiora yesterday. Mrs Harris had doubts about starting the six-year-old in yesterday’s race. She felt it might be better to give the horse more time to freshen after two races at Orari, but at the request ofj one of her owners, Mr Bill Quirk, she left him in the; field for the Macfarlane* Memorial and saw him win I by half a length after mak-j ing all the running. Mr Quirk, a member of the New Zealand Racing Authority, races Borodino in partnership with Messrs Bill Donovan and Ted Reilly, and the horse has now won four races for them. Borodino has won two races this season. He beat the well-regarded Vermont at the Ashburton Centennial meeting last month. Neri, Jaws, and Clair Etoile were the next best behind Borodino separated only by heads. Jaws, the favourite, was held up entering the home straight when Clair Etoile shifted ground outwards. Soon after Clair Etoile and Neti bumped, but no action was taken because both riders took corrective steps. Rustique lost about four lengths when he clipped the heels of Neti beyond the 600 m.
