Taksan to try double
NZPA Melbourne. The Caulfield Cup winner, Taksan. will be given the chance to be the first horse since Galilee in 1966 to bring off the big Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double. His trainer. Tommy Smith, said Taksan would have one more race, the Mackinnon Stakes (2000 metres), before running in the Melbourne Cup on November 7. Smith said he was satisfied with the 3.5 kg penalty given to Taksan for winning Saturday’s Caulfield Cup. The penalty takes Taksan’s Melbourne Cup weight to 55,5 kg. Taksan will clash again in the Melbourne Cup with Arwon, which he beat by a short half head in a controversial photo finish in the Caulfield Cup. Arwon was rehandieapped 2.5 kg for winning the Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield on October 14, and will now carry 50.5 kg in the Melbourne Cup. This means that Arwon will meet Taksan on one kilogram better terms tn the Melbourne Cup. Bookmakers rate Taksan a great chance in the Melbourne Cup, and hav e slashed his odds to 8 to 1.
