Socialism
Sir, —Since Marx and Engels provided socialism with a scientific theoretical foundation, all other theories have been rendered redundant, obsolete, or ridiculous. Ted Hicks is correct in stating that anyone is free to choose his own belief of what socialism or communism really is (for instance Bob Jones’s nonsensical view that Mr Muldoon “is unquestionably the most socialist post-war Prime Minister”), but the correct Marxist view is that there must of necessity be a socialist transition period (the dictatorship of the proletariat) to the future communist society. Although the New Zealand Socialist Party appropriates the Marxist definition of communism, “from each according to his ability.
to each according to his need,” it obviously rejects Marxism. It is, in fact, anarchist. Evidence of the theoretical deficiencies of the Trotskyists and the New Zealand Socialist Party is their belief that the Soviet Union’s economic system is state-capitalism. —■ Yours, etc., M.
