Canvassing

Sir, — Dear me, it is quite confusing. S. Young (October 19) says that “only those whose names actually appear on the roll” will get a vote. Yet the Labour Party has issued its own acknowledgement to those it has registered with the words: “We’ve put you on the roll ... now it’s your responsibility to go out and vote.” Am I to understand from S. Young that even if I have one of these cards it will avail me nothing if my name is not on the roll? Because that is not the impression given by the Labour Party’s card (sample submitted). — Yours, etc., J. R. GREGORY. October 19, 1978. Sir, — It did not take the Labour letter-writing team

long to turn the attention away from F. J. Lilley’s “bloomer” and attack the member of Parliament, Colleen Dewe. It is ridiculous to suggest that members of Parliament can stand around on street corners and at the same time wait for people to contact them, when they are busy doing what they are paid to do. If Colleen Dewe is sometimes difficult to contact it is because she is busy with electorate problems. —Yours, etc., V. MAXTED. October 23, 1978.
