Transfer affects picnic
The annual Labour Day picnic in Christchurch, lususally held at Linwood Park, was shifted to Queen Elizabeth II Park on Monday afternoon, resulting in a drop in atten : nee. Nevertheless, the chairman of the picnic committee of the regional council of the Labour Party (Lady Macfarlane) said, “It was better than we expected.” She said it was hard to estimate how many people attended the picnic but she “guessed” about 6000. The change in venue was decided by the picnic committee on Saturday afternoon, and the only ways to tell people were by tc’ephone and radio. “We just rang around ” Lady Macfarlane said. “It is very hard to let everyone know.” The Christchurch City Council had advised the committee that Linwood Park was not suitable because the grounds were muddy after heavy rain.
