Arapawa goats

The Lands and Survey Department does not intend taking any more goats from Arapawa Island pending the likely purchae of a block of land towards the top of the island, on the peninsula, as a wildlife trust, the chairman of the Marlborough Sounds Maritime Park Board has reported to the board. The department had been asked by the Arapawa Wildlife Trust not to take any more goats because it was believed that only about 200 were left on the island and it was hoped to put these into a fenced wildlife area, said Mr Mitchell. The Minister of Lands (Mr W. L. Young) had agreed to this, he said. On this same subject, Mr Mitchell said a Mr Grey had laid a complaint with the Ombudsman that all the facts regarding the goats on Arapawa Island had not been presented at meetings held earlier to discuss goat control on the island. Five volumes of files had been sent to the Ombudsman in Christchurch. These had since been returned but nothing further had been heard from the Ombudsman, he said.
