Warning on salmon
The Canterbury regional fisheries officer (Mr R. V. Reid) is worried that whitebaiters at the Waimakariri River might unintentionally catch young quinnat salmon heading for the sea this week. | Beginning from this I Labour Day week-end. more than 500,000 salmon will be released from the Silverstream fish hatchery. They will migrate down the Kaiapoi River and out the Waimakariri mouth to the sea. The salmon are 75mm to 100 mm (3in to 4in) long and | could be caught in whitebait | nets. ; According to Mr Reid, fisheries regulations require I the immediate and safe reTurn to the water of acclimatised fish such as salmon and trout taken while, netting for indigenous fish (whitebait, smelt, mullet). "The co-bperatin of whitebaiters in returning any net caught salmon alive to the river is requested,” Mr Reid said.
