Radio station telephoning

Sir, — Several hundred years ago, there was a time of persecution when, at the

ringing of a bell, all citizens had to affirm their allegiance to the king, as loudly as possible. The faithful were given pieces of gold, and those who did not respond loudly enough or quickly enough were burnt at the stake. In these somewhat more civilised times, history is repeating itself. At the ringing of a telephone bell the faithful show their keenness by lauding their radio station, in the hope that they will receive tc day’s equivalent of gold pieces. For whom does the bell toll? — Yours, etc., MICHAEL W. MURPHY. October 20, 1978.
