Socialism
Sir, — While I agree that Graeme Yardley’s examples (October 19) of the Conquistadores, witch hunts and the other monstrosities carried out in the name af God are completely unjustifiable, I strongly disagree that they place Biblebased Christianity on the same level as socialism. Whereas socialism attempts to operate on the principle of change society and you will change man. Bible-based Christanity says that if man is changed his society will change. Even Tolstoy adhered to the Christian idea as is shown in his quote: "Everyone thinks of changing the world but nobody thinks of changing himself.” The correspondent might also find it interesting to trace the countless examples of Christian love and compassion, starting with the incarnation and crucifixion of Christ for the sake of mankind. I agree that in certain cases socialism and Christianity are comparable, but in the majority of cases a complete dichotomy exists between the two. — Yours, etc.,
BRYAN LACEY. October 21, 1978.
