Sir, — Six hundred thousand New Zealanders, 20 per cent of us, are said to be living below the social security poverty line. This amazing statement calls for an explanation. This country ranks high as one .with low extremes of income: we are an egalitarian society. So if 20 per cent of us live below the social security poverty line, most others are not far above it. Can it be that we have an inflated idea of what is poverty? Or is it that our rapidly increasing number of solo parents should be given two incomes? — Yours, etc.,
