“Public tolerance” of homosexuality

Sir. — Mrs N. R. Raine i(“The Press” October 19) (asks how I know that “most ' New Zealanders support I homosexuality and are well I informed about it.” My ! sources include: Heylen polls I going back over the last few ! years; opinion polls recently j conducted in the Hamilton, \ Island Bay, Wellington Cen- ■ tral and Papanui electorates; j and the very positive re- ; sponse we get from the ser- [ vice, church, health and j other groups who ask us to | speak with them. Like Mrs ! Raine, I object to minority ; groups applying labels to I others: most specifically to | the minority of less than 6 ! per cent who apply labels such as “sick,” “queer,” “deviant”, “immoral,” etc., to gay people. I also am annoyed that the Mental Health Foundation has to give money and that Gayline counsellors have to give their time to helping those gay people who are victims of ignorance and antoganism from normal (?) people. — Yours, etc., MIKE WAGHORNE. Secretary. National Gay Rights Coalition. October 19, 1978.
