“Public tolerance” of homosexuality
Sir, — Your correspond-j ent, Varian J. Wilson, needs no help from me. However, do others also object to the misuse of the word, “gay” as I do? After all, being "happy and gav” does not mean “sodomy” which is what Varian J. Wilson isj really discouraging. It is obvious that some people believe that they should be granted freedom without regard to the welfare of others. —Yours, etc., ROBERT HOLMES. October 17, 1978. Sir, — While I agree with most of what H. A. Chant said in his letter (October 17) I feel that the last thing we need as homosexuals is charity, Christian or otherwise. Charity implies something is given and I do not see how human rights can be given by one person or section of society to another. The recognition that we have rights as human beings may be given, but not the rights themselves. If we do not have human rights, or are denied them, we must fight for the recognition that we are human with all the rights and duties that go with being human. A previous correspondent mentioned a quotation of Plato via William Barclay. I found it not very likely that Plato could have said what was implied and [ would like to know the conI text and reference. — Yours, | etc., HUGH K. GAW. October 18, 1978,
