Socialism

Sir, — L. H. Carmichael (October 18) is amazing. “Coercion and fear” well apply to socialism in the

Russian sphere but it equally applies to Christianity as practised. The wholesale murder of the Incas and their sixteenth century empire by Spanish Christian zealots, the “witch” murders of the seventeenth, hell fire and brimstone “lest ye repent” coercion of the eighteenth and nineteenth, the ban on artificial birth control by the “one true church” of the twentieth — all of these have been, or are, monumental crimes against mankind. Without doubt socialism and Christianity (as they are practised) are comparable. — Yours, etc./

GRAEME R. YARDLEY October 18, 1978.
