A 10-year-old North Aucklander, Gary Traill, stole the limelight in the final events of the Skellerup National Junior Table Tennis championships which finished in Napier yesterday.
On Saturday night he won the under 12 boys’ singles and shared the boys’ doubles with his eight year old brother Murray, and the mixed doubles with Angela White, of H>’tt Valley. Then yesterday morning Traill continued his form in the under 14 grade. reaching the bovs’ and mixed doubles finals. The Traill boys are sons of
Netti Traill, who won the New Zealand women’s singles title eight time between 1960 and 1970.
One of the main upsets came in the under 18 grade where Wellington’s Richard Williment took the boys’ singles title, beating a New Zealand representative Malcolm Darroch, the first seed, 21-18, 21-23, 21-18, in a thrilling final. Results were:—

Murphy (Northland) beat K. A. Prince (Manawatu), 20-22, 22- 21-18; K. A. Phillips (Hutt Valley) beat R. A. Fogarty (Otago), 21-12, 21-11. Final: Murph.v beat Phillips, 24-22, 20-22. 21-13.
Girls’ doubles.—Final: Murphy and G.Young (Northland) beat S. F Gillett (Marlborough) and W Cuthbert (Otago), 21-17, 22-20. Mixed doubles—Final: D. Williment and R. Lee (Hutt Valley) beat Darrick and Prince 15-21. 21-9, 21-18.
