St Patrick’s College, Silverstream beat the tournament favourite Church College (Hamilton), 71-69, in the final of the National Secondary Schoolboys’ basketball championships in the Stoke Stadium on Saturday, the Press Association reports from Nelson.

The final produced the best basketball of the tournament and a cliffhanger finish. At full time the teams were level 67-all and in extra time St Pat’s scored four points to Church’s two. The national squad, drawn from the competing teams, was named at the conclusion of the tournament. It is:—

Linwood High School lost to Bayfield High School 43-56 in the final of a South Island secondary schoolboys’ basketball tournament in Dunedin last week.

Linwood made the final on a count-back from Waitaki Boys’ High School. Earlier in the tournament Bayfield and Linwood had a verv close game. Bayfield winning 67-65.

In its other games Linwood beat Waitaki 72-56 and Otago Boys’ High School, 51-26, and lost to Kaikorai Valley High School, 45-57. It beat Aranui High School by default. The Linwood side was poded in the final and could not repeat its earlier effort against Bayfield.
