P.S.A. merger favoured

The Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) told parliament that he was in favour of the Public Service Association affiliating with the Federation of Labour. He was replying to Government backbencher, Dr I. J. Shearer (Hamilton East) who asked whether he favoured the suggestion, made at the recent P.S.A. conference. “This is a question for the members of the PJS.A. and the Federation of Labour themselves,” Mr Gordon replied. “However, I believe personally that one strong central body representative of all trade unions, would have considerable advantages in negotiations for the employees themselves, for employers and for the Government. “I therefore tend to favour the suggestion.” Mr M. Rata (Lab., Northern Maori) asked Mr Gordon what steps he had taken to encourage the move.

The Minister said he had not suggested it directly to the P.S.A, as it was its affair.

"But I certainly would encourage it,” he said.
