Time to end liquor poll
Sir, — I disagree with your editorial on the liquor poll (August 23). Surely it is of some value to put the greatest evil in New Zealand clearly before the voters, rather than do as you suggest and “sweep it under the carpet." I realise that “The Press” represents the status quo and the influence of the liquor interests. State purchase and control, by removing to some extent the money incentive, would surely be a good move. And, as you state, dropping the liquor poll might affect the local four dry areas. Let prohibitionists take heart and re* member the example of that
