Freedom of speech

Sir, — The concern shown by some of your correspondents over free speech is blatant hypocrisy. By all means deplore that two Communist aligned persons, opposed to their respective governments, are being prevented from being politically: active while visiting New Zealand. However, at least some of the people making the biggest noises about the suppression of free speech in this country, are members of or supporters of H.A.R.T. In a recent copy of its magazine, H.A.R.T. clearly defines as one of its principle objectives, the* removal from New Zealand, of the representative of the South African Government. Why? Because he is speaking up and defending his country and putting forward a point of view opposite to that put by the anti-apartheid movement. It is apparent that at least some only approve free speech when they approve what is being said. — Yours, etc., E. SUTHERLAND, August 24, 1978.
