Abortion as election issue

Sir, — If Mrs Wilkinson (August 18) believes that abortion is an election issue and that 64 per cent of the people are pro-abortion, she must feel very optimistic indeed of becoming Yaldhurst’s member of Parliament in November since she is the only candidate who supports abortion on demand. The source of her statistics is not revealed but I am sure that election day will prove how mistaken she is in the assumption she has made from them. Only a small minority of extremists, on both sides, are fanatical enough to cast their votes on this issue alone, and not being adherents of any specific party, of any consequence, they are likely to cancel one another out. 'Presuming that Mrs Wilkinson’s figures came from a poll or survey, how does she explain the meagre support for Values in recent political polls? According to her reckoning that party should be way out in front. — Yours, SHIRLEY M. WELLS. August 18, 1978.
