Forest proposals at Nelson

Sir, — I wish to congratulate John Wilson on his accurate account of the afforestation proposals for Waahi Taakaro, a Nelson “pleasure ground” now the subject of the Nelson Citv Forestry Empowering Bill (“The Press,” August 10). Submissions on the legislation have been heard by the Local Bills Committee. Two points emerged during the hearing. First, that the area could very, well be managed under the Reserves Act, 1977, to the satisfaction of both

parties, and second, that any attempt to manage the area other than by afforestation is greatly hindered by the Forestry Encouragement Loan which hangs over the council and includes in its terms of agreement that no operations are to begin until the loan has been uplifted. The work has been started, the loan has still to be approved. Caught like this, the Local Bills Committee has become an appeal court, but the groups involved would dearly like to see this particular issue settled “out of court.” — Yours, etc., MARGARETHA GEE. August 20, 1978.
