Mount Hutt winds
Sir,—-On Thursday, August 10, the day a young Australian skier died and another was injured at Mount Hutt, several nearby skifields had closed by II o’clock. Although I did not leave until 2 p.m., I did not hear that Mount Hutt was closed as it should have been, only that “conditions are deteriorating and only experienced skiers should use the T-bar.” I have experienced many severe tropical cyclones, and I have never been so afraid for my life as on this day. To sit for three hours in a vehicle, being bombarded by enormous rocks, expecting that we would be blown off the mountain at any time, is not my favourite way to spend a holiday. I personally saw three cars blown off the road, and many windows blown in, especially rear ones, making it impossible to see because of a layer of ice and filth on the inside front windows. — Yours, etc., A. M. GRIBBEN, Hong Kong. August 17, 1978.
