Historic rail link again
Ferrymead will he con-: nected to the main trunk' railway line this year, for: the first time in more than; 100 years. Track is being laid on the original embankment of the Ferrymead line connecting with' the main Lyttelton-In-vercargill trunk. It will be only a temporary connection, to enable four locomotives and rolling stock to be moved from the Linwood depot to Ferryniead. The Ferrymead Trust hopes to negotiate with the Railways Department for a permanent connection. Before the building of the tunnel under the Port Hills, Ferrymead was rhe terminus of the main railway line : from Christchurch. Cargo! was ferried from there by (sea to Lyttelton.
