English Harbour third
PA Wellington English Harbour, the Mill Reef horse bought recently for the Ardsley Stud, at Masterton was narrowly beaten in a pattern race in England on Tuesday. Though English Harbour has been bought for Ardsley he is still racing for the Queen, his owner and breeder. It is expected he will continue to do so until the last English classic of the season, the St Leger in September. Tuesday’s race was the group 3 Gordon Stakes, run over a mile and a half (2400 m at Goodwood at set weights with penalties and allowances.
Ridden by Willie Carson, English Harbour made the running and was challenged two furlongs out by a pair of Blakeney three-year-olds, Sexton Blake and Roscoe Blake. The finish was tight all the way from there and English Harbour was third, beaten by two noses. The winner, Sexton Blake, had a Timeform rating of 126 last season and Roscoe Blake 114. Fourth in the Gordon Stakes was Inkerman, from Vincent O’Brian’s stable, filling the place he occupied in the Irish Sweeps Derby. If all goes well with English Harbour his next start probably will be in the Group 1 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, another twelve furlong race in which he might meet this year’s Derby victor, Shirley Heights.
