Gas supply ends today

The manufacture of gas in Timaru definitely ends today. “It is sad when an institution that has been in existence for more than 100 years comes to an end,” said the Timaru city electrical engineer (Mr A. J. Sleight). In the early 1970 s gas operating losses were reduced significantly, but this improvement was wiped out by dramatic increases in fuel costs at the time of the “sixday” Arab-Israeli War. Previously fuel cost about 10c per gallon but today it cost almost 80c a gallon.

There were 1800 consumers in 1970. Last year, when the decision was made to close the gasworks, there were about 1200. .

"The city council is keeping an open mind on the future,” said Mr Sleight. Possibilities included the bulk supply of L.P.G. from the Maui gas field at reduced prices, the piping of North Island natural gas to the South Island and even the discovery of natural gas in the South Island.
