Students get new president
The University of Canterbury Students’ Association has, after some confusion, got a new president for next year. He is Mr Tony Stuart, who is studying commerce and law.
The election for president was held last week and. for the first time, because of a change in the constitution, students could vote "noconfidence” in the candidates. There were 831 votes of noconfidence, while the votes received by candidates were: Tony Stuart, 529; Juanita Doorey (arts), 231; Kevin Whiteside (law), 198; Peter Horn (science), 77. The returning officer (Mr Tony Couch) declared that nobody had been elected, and that a new election would be needed. However, appeals were made against his interpretation of the clause on noconfidence voting in the constitution.
The matter was referred to the association’s lawyer, who ruled that for a no-confidence option to stand it must receive more votes than the combined total of all other candidates. The over-all votes of the four candidates was 1035. Mr Stuart was subsequently declared president and after several appeals on this decision, the matter was referred to the association’s executive. It ruled that Mr Stuart was the new president.
