Coast rail users asked for support
All consumer groups using the West Coast rail service are being urged by Christchurch’s Rail Action group to protest against the threatened cuts in services. Rail Action has praised the Christchurch City Council’s stand on the issue and called on all other interested groups to make their feelings known to the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan). Rail Action’s spokesman (Mr D. Jones) said that Over
the last 25 years National Governments had closed about 550 miles of branch line railways —450 miles of which were in the South Island. “The last three National i Ministers of Railways have held South Island seats and have closed down branch lines in their own electorates,” said Mr Jernes. “Mr McAlpine closed about 110 miles, Mr Gordon about 200 miles and Mr McLachlan about 120 miles,” ■ he said.
