Teachers’ salary claims
Sir, — I find the words of P. S. Bright (June 21) a sad comment on industrial relations in New Zealand. I am even more disheartened (as he is presumably connected with teaching) when he says “responsible unselfiish continuance” is a sign of weakness in communicating to the authorities concerned with pay and conditions of work. We have deteriorated to the point where confrontation and militancy are the only tactics understood in this type of communication. A more positive attitude needs to be taken. The P.P.T.A. should continue to set an example when negotiating salaries by not taking the “gruesome step” so that other similar organisations may not see it as a sign of weakness. — Yours, etc., C. A. FLANAGAN. June 22, 1978.
