Against the tide of alcohol
Sir, — The sub-leader on alcoholism (June 21) does little towards solving the problem; it merely tells us what we already know. What is needed is an organisation with the wealth to outbid the breweries in the greasing of the palms of politicians, news media executives, etc. Some tax changes would also help. Cockies “shout” for the shearers, etc., and by doing so, are able to book their own supply of liquor for the year to that event and get it tax free. Business firms get. their year’s booze tax free by charging it to the bighearted end of year splash for employees. The $5OO mid-year party is entered as a business conference — tax deducted of course. — Yours, etc.. D. C. McKIE, June 21, 1978.
