Price of oil

Sir, —With reference to your editorial “Steadying the price of oil” (June 21) I fear a continuing complacency by New Zealanders toward the imminent oil shortage. The Saudis are to be commended for holding a further rise in the oil price in face of the declining value of the United States dollar and an increase in world inflation. However, it is just putting off the evil day when we will not be able to afford our present consumption. The real urgency of inevitable oil shortages is not being impressed on us as

it should be. Money that is being saved while the price is stable should be directed towards research of renewable energy sources to a much greater degree. All of us should be preparing now for the effect of prohibitive oil prices and acute shortages.—Yours, etc., C. A. FLANAGAN. June 21, 1978. j
