Crane ruling criticised
Lyttelton’s failure to gain a second container crane has “bitterlv” disappointed Mrs A. Hercus, the Labour Party’s candidate for the electorate. Mrs Hercus said the Ports Authority’s decision appeared contrary to its own ruling of 1974, which was based on the principle of balanced development and competition between Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. ‘The’ Lyttelton container terminal is not being allowed to compete on a fair commercial basis with Port Chalmers, which was given approval for a second container crane early in 1977,” she said.
