Christian education
Sir, — Dr Cotter, the 83-year-old practising physician is pessimistic about civilisation as we know it ("The Press,” June 8). He says: “Things are getting a bit mixed up. How many generations have had secular education — no Christian education at all?” He likens Christianity as the steel reinforcing in a concrete building and says: “When the steel has rusted away we might crumple up.” The
sustaining support has now worn thin and weak. Spare the Bible (the rod) and spoil the child. How unfortunate it is that many of our school committees refuse to have “Bible in schools” on the school curriculum and likewise many parents could not care less about their children going to Sunday school. In consequence the minds of our adolescents become prey to all kinds of evil without restraint. The big crunch comes when their children are involved in today’s unprecedented acts of vandalism. — Yours, etc., ARTHUR DELHANTY. June 9, 1978.
