Child-bearing age
Sir. — -Am I to understand that Miss P. Bartlett in her letter (June 6) is suggesting that because the legal age of marriage is 16, any pregnant 16-year-old girl should get married, have the child and settle down happily to a family life for ever after? Maybe Miss Bartlett is unaware of the level of maturity and emotional readiness needed in setting up a satisfactory atmosphere in which to bring up children. Guilt and remorse might temporarily follow an abortion but frustration and despair in one’s ability to cope with the demands of a young family could drive one to hate the child and oneself. Which is worse, Miss Bartlett? — Yours, etc., KIM MAC ANN. June 10, 1978.
