Horse trials
Sir, —I was at Riccarton for the last two days of the three-day event horse trials at Queen’s Birthday. The roads and tracks and crosscountry (approximately 17 miles) on Sunday were really interesting tc see, and also, the well-built crosscountry fences of which
'/'ere were 35 in all. The TV coverage I saw on both channels was a shambles. Tht public who watched would think it was a “piece of cake” — just bandaging and painting you- horses’ legs and hooves; no crosscountry fences being jumped. As far as I am concerned they should have stayed at home as they blew it”. And, at the same time, there was a very good English programme on horses when everybody interested in horses competing was at Riccarton. Surely the TV staff could have chosen a better time than a New Zealand-wide competition week-end to show that event. — Yours, etc.,
A. P. CROMIE. June 6, 1978.
