University stays open The Prime Minister of; Papua New Guinea (Mr; Michael Somare) has with-! drawn his threat to close the country’s main university after its students refused to end a strike. Mr Somare said he agreed with the university’s council, which had advised him that closing the university would unnecessarily victimise innocent students. Mr Somare first made the threat last week after students at the Papua New Guinea university had taken part in a riot which arose from the strike. — Port Moresby.
