Eventful event
NZPA Melbourne The Commonwealth Steeplechase, which looked a lack lustre affair on paper, turned out to be a sensational lumping event at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The three favourites in the race. Roughneck, So And So and Rothwell Bridge, all fell. After the race, iockey Paul Hely, said his mount. Roughneck, put a foot in a hole—--Bln to Mln deep—and fell coming round the home turn.
Hely and Roughneck were well clear of the field and had the race won when the accident happened. Hely quickly scrambled under the running rati to avoid the horses which were following. Rothwell Bridge at that stage was left in front and was a sure winner when he crashed at the last fence. The race eventually went to Lord Kamulla (12/1) by 15 lengths from Sailor Bear with French Idol five lengths away third.
